Clean Air Act settlements resulted in huge emissions reductions, making Houston's air cleaner

HOUSTON – Sierra Club and Environment Texas announced today that Shell Oil Company and Chevron Phillips Chemical Company have each cut illegal air pollution from major “upset” events at their Gulf Coast plants by about 95%.  Those reductions are even more than was required by their settlements of federal Clean Air Act lawsuits brought by the environmental groups, and have contributed to recent efforts to improve air quality in the Houston metropolitan area.

Court rejects Exxon bid to dismiss citizen enforcement suit

HOUSTON – A federal court has rejected, for the second time, an attempt by ExxonMobil Corporation and two subsidiaries to get rid of a lawsuit filed against them by Sierra Club and Environment Texas.  The lawsuit alleges thousands of violations of the Clean Air Act at the nation’s largest oil refinery and chemical plant complex, located in Baytown, Texas.

ExxonMobil Ends 2012, and Starts 2013, With More Unauthorized Air Pollution

ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas, refinery and olefins plant began 2013 the same way they ended 2012: with large, unauthorized emissions of harmful air pollutants into the surrounding neighborhoods east of Houston. A citizen enforcement suit to end such instances of illegal emissions has been pending in federal court in Houston since December 2010. In the final weeks of 2012, ExxonMobil reported three large “emission events” – releases of air pollution not authorized by its federal Clean Air Act permits – to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). In one event alone, 57 tons of sulfur dioxide, a respiratory irritant, were released in just 18 hours beginning just before midnight on December 20, when a compressor “tripped” at the refinery’s Booster Station 4 unit.

Exxon Loses Bid to Halt Clean Air Act Suit

HOUSTON – A federal court yesterday rejected a motion by ExxonMobil Corporation and two subsidiaries to dismiss a lawsuit filed against them by Sierra Club and Environment Texas. The lawsuit alleges thousands of violations of the Clean Air Act at the nation’s largest oil refinery and chemical plant complex, located in Baytown, Texas. According to the groups, millions of pounds of pollutants have been released in these violations.

Atlas, the settlement agreement would bring significant changes to the company’s Cedar Bayou Chemical Plant, a complex of manufacturing facilities located in Baytown that is one of the largest in the Houston area.

LCRA Faces Lawsuit for Thousands of Clean Air Act Violations at Coal-Fired Power Plant Between Austin and Houston

Three anti-pollution groups today notified the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) of their intent to sue the electric power supplier for more than 10,000 violations of the federal Clean Air Act at LCRA’s coal-fired power plant near LaGrange in Fayette County. The notice of intent was served today by the Environmental Integrity Project, Texas Campaign for the Environment and Environment Texas.

ExxonMobil Faces Clean Air Act Lawsuit For Violations At Nation's Largest Refinery

HOUSTON – Sierra Club and Environment Texas announced today that they intend to sue ExxonMobil Corporation in federal court for thousands of violations of the federal Clean Air Act at its Baytown refinery and chemical plant complex.  The suit would be the third case filed by the two environmental groups since 2008 to stop illegal air emissions arising from so-called “upset” events at facilities along the Houston Ship Channel.
