AUSTIN – Environment Texas announced today its endorsement of Jay Kleberg for Texas Land Commissioner.

“Texas needs champions for our environment in every elected office. And as our next Land Commissioner, Jay Kleberg will protect our public lands and help grow our state’s clean energy capacity for the benefit of present and future generations of Texans,” said Executive Director of Environment Texas Luke Metzger.

Kleberg has been vocal about the need to increase wind and solar energy production on state-owned public  lands; decrease the state university system’s reliance on fossil fuel extraction to support its budgets (a constitutional responsibility of the Land Commissioner’s office); and make Texas’ coastlines more resilient in the face of climate change.

Environment Texas’ endorsement of Jay Kleberg for Land Commissioner is part of a long history of supporting environment-focused candidates running for offices that are typically overlooked by larger media outlets and even voters themselves. The point: many of these overlooked offices have far more power to effect major climate action policy than you would expect.

In 2020, Environment Texas endorsed Chrysta Castañeda for Railroad Commission and Rebecca Bell-Metereau for State Board of Education.
