AUSTIN – Leading Texas environmental group Environment Texas announced today its endorsement of Sara Stapleton-Barrera in the July 14 primary runoff for Texas Senate District 27. The incumbent is Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr.

“Sara Stapleton-Barrera is the clear environmental choice for Senate District 27,” said Luke Metzger, Executive Director of Environment Texas. “She has made the environment a core part of her campaign, opposing the proposed Port of Brownsville LNG export terminals and supporting climate action with investments in wind and solar energy.”

“Unfortunately, Sen. Lucio has a disappointing track record on the environment. He co-authored a law in 2015 which preempted the rights of cities to regulate fracking in neighborhoods. This past session, he voted to discriminate against wind and solar energy in the state’s economic development program and voted to start the process for allowing oil and gas companies to dump wastewater in our rivers and aquifers.”

Senate District 27 faces multiple environmental challenges. The Brownsville area suffered through 111 days of poor air quality due to air pollution in 2018. The Lower Rio Grande is polluted with mercury, fecal bacteria and other pollution. Ocelots and jaguarundis are endangered due to loss of habitat and other threats.

“The voters of District 27 deserve a Senator who will stand up to the polluters and protect our air and water and that person is Sara Stapleton-Barrera,” concluded Metzger.
