AUSTIN – Leading Texas environmental group Environment Texas announced today its endorsement of former Travis County Judge Sarah Eckhardt in the July 14 special election to fill Texas Senate District 14, recently vacated by Kirk Watson. The district covers much of Austin and Bastrop.

“From Barton Springs to the Colorado River, Austin’s environment is the ‘soul of the city,” said Luke Metzger, Executive Director of Environment Texas. “But climate change, air and water pollution, and sprawl are putting much of what makes Austin special at great risk. Our next state Senator needs to be a champion for the environment, and Sarah Eckhardt is the clear choice to take the fight to the Capitol.”

Environment Texas pointed to Judge Eckhardt’s track record of results for the environment as a major factor in their decision. Judge Eckhardt was a strong supporter of efforts to:

  • Ban bee-killing pesticides in Travis County

  • File a lawsuit by Travis County to stop the Permian Highway Pipeline

  • Adopt the first PACE program in the state to provide financing to businesses for solar and energy efficiency

  • Include rainwater harvesting and other water conservation measures in the new County courthouse
