Texas is experiencing the best wildflower season in a decade. Everywhere you look you’ll see incredible displays of bluebonnets. TxDOT is responsible for a lot of these, planting 30,000 pounds of wildflower seeds every year. But our iconic state flower wouldn’t bloom without the help of bees and other pollinators. We count on bees to help make our state so beautiful, and by planting those seeds we attract the bees to come to our roadsides. But those roadsides might be poisoning the very bees we count on to make our roadsides beautiful.

New Study: Multiple dangerous pesticides found in food made and sold by Kroger, Walmart, Costco and Albertsons

Testing released today found store and name-brand foods produced and sold by the top four U.S. food retailers contain residues of toxic pesticides linked to a range of serious health and environmental problems. The foods were purchased in 15 cities across the country by Friends of the Earth and a number of allies, including Environment Texas.

Today I testified before the Texas Senate Natural Resources Committee about pollinator protection. I’m here to talk about the important role that pollinators play in our ecosystems, our food supply and our economy and to talk about the risks facing them.

New tests find no bee-killing pesticides in “bee-friendly” plants at Texas stores

AUSTIN - A report released today showed a significant decrease in the number of bee-friendly” home garden plants sold at major retailers that have been pre-treated with pesticides shown to harm and kill bees. The study of plants purchased at Home Depot (NYSE: HD), Lowe’s (NYSE: LOW), Ace Hardware, True Value and Walmart (NYSE: WMT) was conducted by Friends of the Earth, Pesticide Research Institute and allies, including Environment Texas. No bee-killing pesticides were detected in plant samples collected from Austin stores.

Alarming rate of bee deaths threatens summer picnics

AUSTIN - Strawberries, watermelon, and juicy tomatoes are among the summer picnic staples at risk if bee colonies continue to collapse at unprecedented rates, local farmer Glenn Foore and Environment Texas said today.

Bees pollinate many of the world’s most important crops, including seasonal favorites such as peaches, blueberries, and cherries. But the U.S. is losing about a third of its bee colonies each year, alarming beekeepers, farmers and chefs along with environmental advocates.

This week is Pollinator Week, an "international celebration of the valuable ecosystem services provided by bees, birds, butterflies, bats and beetles." We celebrated with action - calling on major retailers such as Ace Hardware and True Value to phase out the use of the class of bee killing pesticides knows as neonicotinoids (neonics).
